With a membership of just under three million, The American Legion over the past 80 years has become the world’s largest veterans organization. Our powerful lobby in Washington oversees just about every law Congress passes that pertains to veteran’s affairs. Each individual American Legion post is a separate and autonomous non-profit corporation that receives no funding from either the state or national organizations. Each post can choose to become either a social club or a community service organization, or any combination of both.
In June of 2009, the founders of San Tan Valley American Legion Post 97 chose to form a 100% community service organization “to promote American Legion Youth Programs as well as the activities of other non-profit organizations that work for the betterment of children” here in San Tan Valley. We have chosen not to be saddled with the expense of maintaining a physical location in order that we may direct whatever funds we raise back into our community.
We serve an unincorporated area of North Central Pinal County now known as San Tan Valley. We have 3 high schools and 13 elementary schools. Without a city government, we have no parks & recreation department nor any city sponsored youth programs to augment the extracurricular activities of our schools. This scarcity of supplemental youth programs has made it easier for an increasing number of gangs to subject many of our kids to a negative culture of drugs and mayhem. Consequently, American Legion Post 97 has taken on the task of providing our youth with as many positive, character building activities as possible. For more information about our programs please click on the “Programs” tab above.
For funding, we depend on grants, the support of our local business community and our own fundraising programs.
